The main corporate sustainability strategies of Italian footwear’s value chainFrom Assocalzaturifici comes an in-depth study on the current priorities of the footwear industry as regards sustainability and on how the specialised technological service market is answering.
On which strategies are Italian footwear companies relying in this moment? The attention to Sustainability stands out among many others (costs, distribution, promotion, technology...), as it is important to 13.5% of Assocalzaturifici’s members, and it is quite relevant to 36% of the companies. So, a company out of two is interested in this topic. In order to examine the issue in depth, Assocalzaturifici has commissioned a study to Spin 360, in order to evaluate the “business sustainability strategy” of the industry.
It has come out that, in the footwear sector, the global players of the production and supply chain and, in particular, those belonging to high-end luxury, are boosting the adoption of sustainability approaches that, besides reinforcing the identity and image of brands, guarantee a better management of the operational risks linked to their activities along the supply and subcontracting chain.
The study - carried out on a sample of 100 players belonging to the two main categories of the footwear industry: Retailers and Manufacturers, besides 12 technological centres and specialised advanced services - have underlined that Client companies show to be the ones that have better understood the orientation of a “sustainable business strategy”. In such a context the high-end market segments (obviously) have the best performance indexes.
Manufacturing companies, instead, seem not to have met the changed needs of the market yet, also because of the absence of an overall strategy on this topic, while the greater gap between Clients and Manufacturers lies in the topics for which the technological centres mapped have not developed specialised services on the market.
You can give a hand with your feet too
The project “Anche con i piedi si può dare una mano” (You can give a hand with your feet too), born from the partnership between HUMANA People to People Italia ONLUS and Assocalzaturifici, started on the 27th of June. The initiative asks Assocalzaturifici’s member companies to give HUMANA discontinued shoes and old collections. HUMANA will use them to fund a project of scholastic inclusion in primary schools in Chilangoma, Malawi. The initiative, a concrete example of circular economy, is part of the corporate social responsibility policies, because it reconciles economic, social and environmental goals under the perspective of future sustainability.
