CTCR: Sustainable innovation for the future of the shoeThe Footwear Technology Centre of La Rioja (CTCR) promotes the competitiveness of footwear manufacturers, while emphasizing sustainability and “green” innovation

Aug 29, 2017

As the centre par excellence in footwear technology, CTCR is based out of Arnedo, in the heart of La Rioja, the Spanish region famous around the globe for its important wines, as well as for its footwear manufacturing tradition. The activity of the centre is multidisciplinary, including training, certifications, mechanics, electronics and nanotechnologies… different areas that are all united however by the same goal of creating an added value in footwear products and production processes. An increasingly strong focus on the theme of environmental sustainability partially mirrors La Rioja’s DNA and its splendid landscape, and is above all aimed at staying one step ahead of the increasingly strict demands of international markets.

ctcr-momadFruit of a “green footprint” project, developed in collaboration with some leading sector companies, it was presented with the name “Sustainable Fashion” at the last edition of Momad (4-6 March 2017), in a stand that used colours and shapes to reflect environmental themes.

From products that have taken recycling to new levels of virtuosity, to ones recently developed thanks to increasingly cutting-edge research aimed at staying ahead of the demands of businesses, CTCR presented soles made out of tire dust particles, polyurethane foam waste, through the recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment, and with industrial residuals… but also membranes made of biodegradable bacterial cellulose as a replacement for leather, and nanoparticles that enable the design of materials with improved properties (from slip resistance to antibacterial, pain relief, fire resistance, and anti-puncture properties…).

Next to its products, CTCR also offers a series of services dedicated to businesses interested in improving the sustainability of their footwear, including an analysis on the lifecycle of the footwear and calculation of the carbon footprint, allowing them to identify critical phases, where it will then be possible to develop solutions with a reduced environmental impact. These efforts are then certified with the Ecolabel, the European eco-friendly label for footwear.

Even the most advanced digital technologies hold a special place of honour at CTCR: “Photoshot360°” software allows for the development of objects and three-dimensional simulations, while Industry 4.0 solutions brings the company into the 4.0 era. There is then the development of equipment for improving and measuring the performance of footwear, RFID devices for managing and monitoring products, 3D prototyping, etc…

These solutions make CTCR the right partner to those businesses interested in becoming the most cutting-edge ones in the sector, while remaining especially attentive to the issue of sustainability.
