Footwear technicians meet up in Porto for the 20th edition of UITICFootwear technicians meet up in Porto, Portugal, for the 20th edition of the UITIC Congress

Apr 13, 2017

The twentieth Worldwide Congress of the International Union of Shoe Industry Technicians (UITIC) will be held from 16 to 18 May 2018 in Porto at the Sheraton Hotel.

After Chennai, which hosted the 19th edition, the Congress returns to Portugal: in 1996, it was the very same city of Porto to host the event and now it returns as the protagonist of the debate dedicated to footwear technology, taking inside looks at themes like automatic sewing, computerised management, new materials, quality, training, and footwear design…

Organising the event will be Apiccaps, the Portuguese Footwear, Components and Leather Goods Manufacturers’ Association, and CTCP, the Portuguese Footwear Technological Centre.

“CTCP enthusiastically embrace the challenge of bringing the UITIC Congress back to Europe – declared Leandro Melo, General Manager of the Centre – It will be an honour for Portugal to host another edition of the Congress and we will do our best for its fulfilment”.

With 1,473 footwear manufacturers and 38,600 workers, the Portuguese footwear industry is one of the main players in the global sector of footwear.  2016 was the seventh consecutive year of growth in footwear exports, which have collectively grown by 50% since 2010, arriving in more than 150 markets and across the world’s 5 continents.

In recent years, the Portuguese footwear industry has focused its efforts on rapid response time and small series, making these elements cornerstones of its strategic development.  The efforts undertaken in partnership with CTCP with a network of around fifty partners, including universities, businesses, and scientific and technological organizations, have allowed it to develop 100 new “Made in Portugal” innovations that today are exported worldwide.  To reinforce its status as a developer of new technical and technological solutions and new materials for the footwear industry, the Portuguese footwear sector constantly invests in innovation and programs of modernisation.
