At Lineapelle, Lenzing presents its innovative TENCEL™ Lyocell fibersAt the Milan fair dedicated to materials and components for footwear and leather goods, the Austrian Lenzing Group presented a completely sustainable solution that allows footwear to be entirely made, and in all of its parts, from the wood-based cellulose fibers.

tencel_1j2a6485With its headquarter located in Austria, the Lenzing Group claims 80 years of experience in the sector and is considered a worldwide leader in the production of high quality cellulose fibers of botanic origin, with a range of products that spans from wood pulp, to standard and special cellulose fibers.
At Lineapelle this past February, the Group presented footwear manufacturing operators with the concept of the ‘complete shoe’ made from the innovative TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers, with a focus on the eco-friendly and biodegradable materials increasingly in demand by important international brands and by consumers themselves.  Worldwide footwear production is in fact estimated at 23 billion pairs per year and this represents an enormous environmental cost, since almost the totality of this number is not recyclable once the pairs are no longer in use.
tencel_suoleTo resolve this problem, Lenzing presented a project of sustainable footwear that can be almost entirely made using TENCEL(MT) Lyocell fibers at the show in Milan: from the textile fibers used for the upper, to the material used for the filling or the fabric-non-fabric for the insole, all the way to the LENZING™ Lyocell Powder for the sole or padding. Even the laces and support materials like the zips can be green, leading to a footwear solution that is completely eco-friendly.
TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers are also characterized by a high level of breathability, ensuring excellent sweat management, and complete compatibility with all the main materials used in the footwear manufacturing industry, representing a real and innovative alternative to conventional materials.

“The ecologic awareness of consumers is generally on the rise” – confirms Birgit Schnetzlinger, who is responsible for the development of the footwear segment in Lenzing -. “They are becoming increasingly critical and well-informed about sustainability and are paying more attention to the products they purchase and their origins. This represents a great opportunity for TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers, which can offer a concrete solution to the footwear industry”.

tencel_pulpTENCEL™ Lyocell fibers are derived from wood pulp taken from trees cultivated in accordance with the strictest guidelines for the sourcing of wood and cellulose, while following a closed-loop production process that guarantees minimal environmental impact, with low water and energy consumption and the frugal use of raw materials. A production cycle that was also rewarded with the “European Award for the Environment” by the European Commission.
