‘Spades on hand and ready to break ground’, the Managing Director of Desma, Klaus Freese, together with Prof. Heinz Jörg Fuhrmann, CEO of Salzgitter AG, and representatives of the regional and local government and administration authorities symbolically broke ground this past 6 June at Achim, in northern Germany, to inaugurate the construction of the new “Factory of the Future” of Desma, which will be up and running by Fall 2020.
The new future production site will consist of a combined factory and office complex, with a 12,000-square-metres production building that will include the warehouse and new paint shop and will handle preliminary and final assembly. It will also house the showroom and the Innovation Center, where DESMA will test and present the latest technological developments. At the production site, there will be a three-story U-shaped office block of 4,500 square metres, which will house offices, staff rooms and a cafeteria.
The entire new complex is designed to match state-of-the-art LEAN production methods, with a view to innovation and efficiency, and with the aim of “optimising our work processes while upholding our high quality standards and making us more flexible,” underlined Mr. Freese.
The decision of the German giant to give life to a new production site and headquarters is closely tied into the exponential growth it has experienced over the last two years, with the old factory buildings having reached their limits in terms of both capacity and space.
“The new building will allow us to optimise our production processes, raise efficiency and productivity and will also provide better working conditions for our staff,” commented the Desma management team.
As already seen, it will be a building designed to reflect modern workflow principles and efficiency, with a new factory based on the “Green Field” principle, which however will also value and safeguard the workforce and personnel at the Achim location, where 260 highly qualified employees currently work, producing around 60 rotary tables annually, most of which are exported. The new headquarters will be inaugurated during the traditional appointment with Desma House Fair in Fall 2020.
