What state of health are Chemistry and Technology for Tanning in?
“The technology sector of the tanning sector is closely related to the economic performance of the tannery itself. 2020 has seen a considerable drop in orders, and the situation remains currently stationary. We will have to wait a few more months to see if the world health situation will turn out to be better or not. I believe that the market is still very much conditioned by this variable. We hope to catch up with the September fair in Milan, as long as our customers are able to travel”.
In ASSOMAC you are in charge of the issue related to Technical Assistance and Training. What initiatives can we expect in this regard?“Given the current health situation, we need to focus on technology for remote contact with the customer. Technicians and entrepreneurs of Assomac’s working group have started discussing the topic already last April, laying the foundations for a unitary work of the sector and identifying the primary points to be developed: assistance, outside training and machine/manufacturer interactivity for remote management.
This month we will start the work of the second phase, which will provide everyone with guidelines and clear indications about what tools to use and how to use them to manage different situations. If we succeed, and I am sure of it, the technology and processes we are developing today will be very useful even after the pandemic has been defeated. A quick understanding of the customers’ issues or needs and providing them with a timely solution will in fact be the main advantage for us”.

Can we go into detail?
“Sure, I’ll proceed in stages.

ASSISTANCE – Technologies for remote assistance on machinery
Remote assistance is the most important thing to discuss today for a fast and safe intervention. As a first step we have equipped or must equip our machines with network cards that allow a remote connection and thus control machine parameters, provide immediate software assistance, make updates to the system. This means that each machine is equipped with on-board software that can monitor all parts subject to wear, breaking or malfunction.Second, taking advantage of technology, now also available on smartphones, which allows you to see in real time and remotely what the customer is observing of the machine and guide him with precision in control and repair operations. A powerful technology that allows you to interact in various ways with the interlocutor by drawing arrows, circles, symbols, or by sharing explanatory images and videos. A dream until recently, a reality today, available to everyone. Last step: since these technologies require large investments, we will have to think of contract models for remote assistance that can satisfy both manufacturer and customer. Finally, each company will have to equip itself, if it hasn’t done so yet, with complete guides for the installation of the machines or work line.

OUTSOURCE TRAINING
How to reach the customer without being able to travel
We will develop thematic presentations and technological focuses to be provided to local sector associations in the countries of interest, directly involving customers, entrepreneurs but above all technicians. Each company will equip itself with its own information materials, such as targeted videos or technical articles, to be presented to customers. In addition, next April, we will join the training course of the Master “Fashion Sustainability & Industry Innovation”, organised by the Costume & Moda Academy of Milan. We have already put in place a first presentation of our Association to ASSA, the Association of Contractors of Santa Croce sull’Arno and surroundings with which we have arranged specific training meetings on Machines, Safety, Use and Maintenance. It is only the first step to then collaborate with other associations in the supply chain. We opened a discussion table with the Leather District of the Veneto region, to better collaborate on the issues of Ethics.

Sustainability, Circular economy starting exactly from technology, and intervening in the professional training of ITIS students in Arzignano to become a Green Manager.

IN-HOUSE TRAINING
We will make the knowledge and regulatory updates relating to the companies’ work cycles available to all the operators of the associated companies in the supply chain. We will proceed with the basic Assomac courses for tannery, footwear and leather goods and with the more specific training projects for technicians, as well as identify additional themes in synergy with the training offer already in place.

VARIOUS FIELDS
Once developed the data exchange technology between the machine and the manufacturer, we opened a discussion table with companies specialising in management systems for the exchange of machine data with in-house management programmes in order to optimise communication. To present our products, we will have to exploit 3D technology and create ever more real animations of the technologies we propose, to be exhibited at Assomac’s trade shows and product sector in order to combine savings with innovation. The updating of the Conditions of Sale and Supplementary Covid Clauses is another theme that we must address immediately. Finally, we must address the standard issue to be applied to the measurement of hides, together with SSIP and UNIC, and study its applicability”.

What do you think are the challenges that you as entrepreneurs will have to overcome in the coming months?
“The work crisis and the pressing competition stimulate the entrepreneur to develop new technologies or new working methods that contribute to the development of the market. We will have to stimulate the customer to consider the change of old or no more competitive machinery compared to new technologies. As for the Italian internal market, the aid that comes from the Industry 4.0 plan should be a further investment stimulus.Another and equally important battle that we must face with the leather supply chain is the formation and correct information of what leather is, where it is obtained, how it is worked and how it is totally reused. Leather is, to date, a natural product and an example of Circular Economy, which can be applied to a bag, a jacket, a pair of trousers, a shoe or a seat and its value, in terms of sustainability, must no longer be put in discussion. Since few are aware of it, it is our duty to train and inform”.
