Already a member of LWG – Leather Working Group, the organisation that promotes best business practices in terms of sustainability, Isa Tan Tech decided to further reinforce its commitment to transparency and sustainability in the supply chain by also participating in LITE – Low Impact to the Environment Sourcing. The programme calls for the use of sustainable natural resources, accountability in the supply chain, and the fair and ethical treatment of animals, and is applied to all raw materials, from the sourcing of leathers to chemicals, packaging, and other materials and assets, with the company required to communicate all measurable improvements made.
In particular, for cattle hide purchases within the LITE Sourcing concept, Isa Tan Tech has developed a sourcing protocol under the name of “Greener Pastures” that will include leathers for both footwear and luxury markets. The protocol has strict sustainability requirements that must be met: all hides in the program must be traceable to the farm or ranch by lot with full transparency, they must meet specific animal welfare program requirements including Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) and Beef Quality Assurance Transportation (BQAT). They must then be verified by third party independent auditors based upon USDA Humane Handling program protocols. Animals under the programme are fed a 100 percent vegetarian diet without animal by-products and raised with no added hormones or antibiotics.
Accordingly, the LITE Sourcing programme allows customers to ensure their leather sourcing adheres to a high standard of animal welfare, and ethical and environmentally sustainable practices. At the same time, the environmental footprint in the entire supply chain is minimized.
