It all began with Milano Design Week 2019 where 3M presented the installation “A Pinnacle of Reflection”, showcasing its technologies in a visual medley of shapes and colours, while striking a note with fashion and design enthusiasts from the world’s top brands. Among these was Nike on the verge of launching a new line of shoes characterised by the theme of protection, which decided to start up a collaboration with the multinational American corporation.
Thus, during a series of visits to the global headquarters of 3M, Nike designers were able to visualize the technologies selected to help protect end users, including materials that expressed warmth, durability, visibility, breathability and more… The samples developed in 3M were then brought back to Nike headquarters in Oregon where the team of this sportswear brand decided to feature 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material throughout the entire sneaker collection, including the iconic silhouettes of Force, Air Max and Blazer, to elevate the shoes’ aesthetics. Nike also used 3M™ Thinsulate™ Insulation to add an extra layer of warmth in a portion of the sneakers.
“We are thrilled to partner with such a respected global brand and revolutionary like Nike”, said Brian Rice, 3M’s Vice President of Brand and Design. “The result of this collaboration highlights the value of design in bringing our 3M technologies to life in a way that improves the customer experience”.
3M is not new to collaborations with top brands: both the technologies adopted by Nike have been utilized by some of the very best apparel brands for some time now. In 2019, Adidas applied the 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material to its updated Nite Jogger collection, while the running apparel brand Brooks included 3M™ Scotchlite™ C790 Carbon Black Stretch Transfer Film in their Run Visible collection.
“3M has earned the trust of brands because our materials are based on sound science”, said Ryan Gallagher, a Global Marketing Manager for 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material. “We apply our technologies to make products more impactful, and this collaboration with Nike is a great example of that”.
